LAS VEGAS – The 2010 NHL Award nominees gathered in the Key West Room at the Palms Casino Resort on Tuesday afternoon to discuss many things, most notably the past season and their chances to walk away winners. The media was then treated to a special sneak peek of Snoop Dogg’s performance for Wednesday’s NHL Awards Show, which was broadcast live on Versus starting at 7:30 pm Eastern time.
Among those NHL stars in attendance (who all went on to win awards) were:
Chicago Blackhawks D Duncan Keith
James Norris Memorial Trophy Winner – Outstanding All-Around Defenseman
On winning an Olympic Gold Medal & the Stanley Cup in the same year: “It’s obviously a pretty special accomplishment, I’m very proud of it. I’m very proud to be associated with Team Canada, and I feel very fortunate to have been on the Blackhawks this year. To be part of a great team with a great group of guys, it was a lot of fun and very exciting.”

Buffalo Sabres G Ryan Miller
Vezina Trophy Winner – Outstanding Goaltender
On 2010 with the Sabres: “It’s definitely been a fun year. We had a strong regular season, but unfortunately the playoffs didn’t go our way. But it’s something where I think we can build and be positive for next year.”
On the 2010 Winter Olympics: “The Olympics were a lot of fun. It was a different group of guys, a lot of them with something to prove. The fact that we went out there and set a great tone for USA Hockey, we’re all very proud.”
On what winning the Vezina Trophy means: “Growing up, you obviously dream about it , to be recognized as an elite goaltender in the National Hockey League. When I do things, I always want to do them in the best way.”

Phoenix Coyotes F Shane Doan
King Clancy Memorial Trophy Winner – Leadership Qualities On & Off the Ice
Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award Nominee
On being nominated for an award named after his idol Mark Messier: “He was what I wanted to be as a hockey player. Him, Wayne (Gretzky), Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr, those four guys – I lived and breathed and died with the Oilers, so to have any association with Messier is very special.”
On having the NHL Awards in Las Vegas: “I think the players, everyone kind of thinks it’s a unique thing. When people start a tradition, I don’t think it matters where it is as long as it continues.”

Vancouver Canucks C Henrik Sedin
Art Ross Trophy Winner – Leading Scorer
Hart Memorial Trophy Winner – Most Valuable Player to His Team
On the toughest defenseman he’s played against: “Duncan Keith is tough, for sure. It’s not like he’s really physical, he just skates really well. You try to beat him once, and he’s right there again.”
On losing to the Blackhawks in the playoffs: “They had a really good team. I thought they were the best team in the playoffs, and they showed that in all the rounds. It made it easier losing somehow when they won it all.”

Washington Capitals C Alex Ovechkin
Ted Lindsay Award Nominee Winner – Most Outstanding Player Selected by the NHLPA
On losing in the first round of the NHL playoffs: “It was a shock, but it’s life. It shows that it doesn’t matter how good you are, if a team’s going to do something, they’re going to do it.”
On a new offseason training routine: “I’m going to change my training and do something different. But I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m going to think about it.”
On his new DVD due out later this year: “It’s a pretty fun time. The NHL came to visit me in Moscow, I was in Miami and they visited me. It’s something new and what I want to do, so it’s nice. It’s good for fans because they can see not only Alex Ovechkin the hockey player, but how he relaxes, what he’s doing in Moscow and different places.”
