Until The Puck Drops: Hockey Has the Coolest Trophies

Share |

We all know the Stanley Cup is the coolest championship trophy in all of sports. The NHL can also take claim to the most splendid collection of trophies this side of Grandma’s china closet.

Below is some of the best silverware in all of sports. I mean what athlete doesn’t want to call home and tell Dad he won the Lady Byng Award.

The Frank Selke Award: Top Defensive Forward

The Selke is awarded to that player who is as daft in the defensive  zone, as he is in the offensive zone.  Stealing pucks, and making plays make such a difference in today’s NHL. Pavel Daytsuk is the King of the Steal, and the best defensive forward in the game; he should always win the Selke hands down. It’s gotten to a point now where commentators use Pavel Daytsuk’s last name as an adjective;

Daytsukian adj resembling or suggestive of conditions of getting the puck freggin’ TAKEN.

Used in a sentence: That was a Daytsukian effort to chase after that loose puck.

The George Vezna: Top Goaltender

The George Vezna Trophy was named after this fine gentleman. His nick name was the Chicoutimi Cucumber. It also seemed it held his goal stick like a right-winger. I would assume this method helped him become the 1st goaltender to record an assist, and the 1st to record a shut out. Fitting that this year Mr. Ryan “Miller-acle” Miller, and Mr. Vezna names are synonymous.

The Hart Trophy, MVP

Henrik Sedin won the MVP trophy last night but are we really sure he accepted it? Leaves one to ask certain questions. Only one name gets to be etched on their in line with the number 99′s and 66′s. And Henrik Sedin worked very hard to play at his best. And that he did.
